Open House Tour and Social at Sussex
Model Home on June 23

Join us for a free open house tour and social at our Draceana model home, W238 N7540 High Ridge Dr. in Sussex on Sun., June 23. The Draceana is a “Step Beyond Green to Healthy Home,” which was designed and built using healthier building materials and processes.

The model home is open from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., with a tour led by Dimension Design, Build, Remodel staff to take place at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served following the tour.

“We are asked every day how to make a home healthy,” said David Kallie, CR, CAPS, owner of Dimension Design, Build, Remodel. “Our model home in Sussex is a wonderful example of how to construct a dwelling that is healthy for the people and pets that live in it. As a wide variety of harmful health conditions are linked to the products and chemicals in our homes, we have minimized the chemicals and unhealthy products and maximized the mechanical systems in the Draceana model and incorporate those same concepts in other homes we build and remodeling projects we complete.”

Some of the “healthy home” building practices and design concepts used on the model include paints and stains with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a motion-activated air scrubber to eliminate exhaust odors and toxins from the garage, hard surface flooring, quartz countertops, formaldehyde-free cabinets with low VOCs, a multi-zoned clean air system with an ultra-violet light and MERV 13 filter, a whole house water purification system with reverse osmosis, split-level electric for reduced electromagnetic radiation, a whole house central vacuum, and LED recessed can lights.

The Draceana is a 3,200 finished square foot ranch home with four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and a three-car garage. The home features nine-foot ceilings on the main level and nine-foot basement walls, with fiber cement siding, a partial stone veneer exterior, solid wood doors and trim, aluminum clad windows, and tray ceilings in all bedrooms.

The model was awarded “Best in Construction” at the 2018 Metropolitan Builders Association Parade of Homes based on quality and selection of construction materials, quality of workmanship, attention to detail, best use of site constraints, and overall appearance. It also received a bronze award for “Best Overall Model Home.”

Addition and Kitchen Remodel in Progress

We recently started a residential addition project in Wauwatosa. The renovation consists of demolition of the existing kitchen, patio, and laundry room, building a 500 square foot addition to increase the size of the kitchen and laundry room, and creating new dining and living room space.

Over the years, our clients have had our company remodel other areas of their home, including two full bathrooms and the family room fireplace. The kitchen and laundry room were the last areas in their Prairie-style home they needed to update, as they were the only spaces in the existing home that were original construction.

The new layout will boast a gourmet kitchen that will double the space’s current size and add an informal dining area at the island with custom cabinets.

The new first floor laundry room will have a larger sink and countertop, seating bench, and added storage. The new dining and living room area will look onto the beautiful river and park adjacent to the property.

This project is scheduled for completion in late summer and will be featured on the 2020 NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes.

Kitchen Concepts with Staying Power

When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, there are many design accents that need to be considered. The following are 10 concepts that not only work now but will be in style for years to come.

  1. Accessible Layouts
A yearning for casual dining and comfortable food prep propelled this trend that advocates a united lifestyle, fostering interaction.
  2. Quartz Counters
Necessitating a reduction in cleaning, quartz countertops less also provide unending appeal. Another attribute is they match with both dark and light hued cabinets, easily assimilating into the chosen color scheme.
  3. Induction Cooking
There are many benefits to induction cooking, as it is fast, safe, and visually attractive. Since induction burners use little heat, kitchens remain cool and surfaces safe to touch. Also, conduction stove tops remove the need for a large range hood, providing additional design opportunities.
  4. Ceiling Accents
Providing design interest in the space, there are a variety of concepts when considering accented kitchen ceilings. For example, shallow coffers can be used in small spaces, while moldings mimicking an island’s shape can delineate larger kitchens.
  5. Counter-Height Islands
Enhancing a kitchen’s warmth, counter-height island also increased food preparation space. Selecting this type of island with a waterfall edge allows for stools to be placed below.
  6. Appliance Integration
The assimilation of appliances into a kitchen through paneling and built-ins allows for appliances to blend into cabinetry or be presented as a tasteful decorative piece.
  7. LED Lighting
With an ability to be utilized innovatively while being a longer-lasting and more efficient product, LED lighting can be used in the kitchen to brighten the space below cabinetry or within an island, plus illuminate a toe-kick.
  8. Wood(like) Flooring
New materials with the look of wood have gained in popularity and will continue to do so as products continue to be developed. This includes porcelain planks that have the same appearance of wood but are easier to maintain.
  9. Sensible Sinks
The design of a single bowl that confines splashes while obliging large items that require handwashing shows that function has become the key component when it comes to sinks, as large genres, such as farmhouse-style sinks, are being incorporated into kitchens.
  10. Drawer Depth
Extra-deep drawers, particularly by the range, simplify cooking and storage, as they offer additional accessibility and can easily be incorporated into a kitchen’s design. There are also extras such as pegboard and drawer organizers that provide additional organization.

How Do I Make My Home Healthy?

When we think of our home, one of the first thoughts that typically comes to mind is that it’s a place where we are safe. While the structure of the home protects us from the elements, how our home is constructed and the materials used may be negatively impacting our health.

Through research, we have determined that many of the building products used today discharge chemicals that make the air quality in homes unhealthy. These chemicals can affect a variety of your body’s systems, including the immune, circulatory, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, and digestive systems. These unhealthy homes are making adults, kids, elderly individuals, and pets ill and causing a myriad of medical conditions.

With this in mind, we have incorporated healthy materials, products, and processes into our company culture and the design/ build process. Our entire team, from designers to construction staff, vendors to trade associates, are educated on the process of building healthier homes. We also understand the importance of educating our clients

about the healthy building options available, thinking through the project using a detailed systematic method, incorporating client lifestyle needs into the design and selections, and communicating clearly and efficiently.

So, what do we do to make homes healthy for those that reside in the dwelling? Some of the “healthy home” building practices we have used on home and remodeling projects include…

  • paints, stains, and adhesives with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • a motion-activated air scrubber to eliminate exhaust odors and toxins from the garage
  • hard surface flooring, such as cork, which has antimicrobial properties so it doesn’t create or absorb mold, mildew, or bacteria, plus it’s easy to keep clean and dust free.
  • quartz countertops
  • formaldehyde-free cabinets with low or no VOCs
  • cotton fiber insulation
  • a multi-zoned clean air system with an ultra-violet light and MERV 13 filter
  • a whole house water purification system with reverse osmosis
  • split-level electric for reduced electromagnetic radiation
  • a whole house central vacuum
  • LED recessed can lights

During construction, we also use Buildclean air purification units to constantly filter the air in the structure. This greatly reduces the amount of dust in the home, which is prevalent during the building process.

What can you do to make your home healthier? Choose non-toxic stainless sinks, ceramic cookware, electric appliances, and steam cooking, plus don’t forget to choose healthy soaps and cleaning products. You can also install sealed metal duct runs and select an HVAC system that helps clean the air in your home.

As you consider your remodeling project or constructing a new home, keep in mind the ways to make your home healthy, which in turn will keep you and your loved one in peak physical condition.
