We all have busy lives, with manic mornings and days we’re moving until we crawl into bed at night. Sometimes we need to relax and unwind.
Believe it or not, your bathroom can help. “Health and wellness continue to play an important role in bathroom remodeling, as the space should feel like a retreat,” said David Kallie, MCR, CKBR, CAPS, President and CEO of Dimension Inc.
As one of the most used rooms in your home and the place where you typically start and end your day, your bathroom should reflect a current trend: a room that makes you feel like you just stepped into a spa.
The following are some must-include elements of your next bathroom remodel to help turn the space into an oasis:
Freestanding Tubs
Gone are the days of the classic, alcove bathtub that doubles as a shower. “A freestanding tub adds a touch of luxury to the room and serves as its focal point,” said David.
The sophisticated look of a freestanding tub brings charm to the standard fixture. For even more pizzazz, some homeowners like to add a chandelier above the tub.
Better yet, because this type of tub is not connected to the walls, it makes the whole bathroom look bigger and more spacious.
Roomy Showers
While a bath is nice when you have the time to lounge, sometimes you need a quick shower. Modern bathrooms have larger showers with rain showerheads, which are the perfect addition if you’re looking for a spa-like feel in the bathroom. “Rain showerheads help relax the muscles, detoxify the skin, and rejuvenate the body,” said David. “Adding a handheld showerhead is a refreshing option to bring the water closer to you.”
Some homeowners like to use frameless glass as the walls of the shower. It helps the shower feel bigger and more open, while also optimizing the natural light that shines through their windows.
Calming Colors
“While all-white bathrooms were popular and can bring a sense of calm, bold colors and warmer tones are gaining popularity, used on wall tiles, flooring, and accents,” David said.
Earthy tones like hues of green, brown, grey, and blue can work to your advantage. If you’re timid about using bold colors, try using a splash of color on an accent wall. On the other hand, if you’re all for trying something new, you could make the bathroom look like a forest using light browns and dark greens, or like a beach with blues and sand-like colors.
An Array of Lighting
No matter what colors you choose, the lighting in the room should complement them. A mix of task and ambient lighting is best, as long as the lights are on a dimmer to make the atmosphere more soothing.
“A popular option for task lighting that many homeowners ask for is a lighted vanity mirror,” said David. “The LED lights are a little more mellow, allowing enough light for grooming, but not an overwhelming amount.”
Integrated Storage
The bathroom comes with all types of toiletries, and it won’t be an oasis if it looks cluttered. “The convenience of storage solutions is a must,” said David. “Many bathrooms now have built-in closets for robes, towels, and other items that need to be easily accessible.”
Other popular storage solutions are custom cabinets, floating shelves, a small table alongside the freestanding tub, and even a shampoo niche in your large shower.
Smart Technology
“As technology progresses, it’s important for homeowners to think about including smart technology within the bathroom design, which also gives the room a more luxurious feel,” said David.
Many homes include wireless sound systems for singing in the shower, voice-activated lighting to set the mood, and smart mirrors to get your look just right.
Others fight off the cold with radiant floor heating and heated towel racks. Some homeowners go even further and opt to install the Japanese-famous bidets, as well as showers that automatically turn on and warm the water to a desired temperature.
